Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: netbook-launcher
I installed netbook-launcher along with hundreds of other packages,
thinking I could take a look at it at somepoint. Well, I reboot the
computer and this obnoxious application takes over the desktop. It
fails to identify itself in any way - so you know what to kill or search
for help on. Or how to get it back when it crashes if you are insane
enough to want it (or just don't know any better and don't know how to
use the system without it since it was what you learned). The help
button takes you to a page that has absolutely nothing about netbook-
launcher. It thinks it has the right to minimize all my windows if
I click on the desktop (for example to get rid of a pulldown menu you
didn't want) - even if I right click. And you can't quit it from the
quit menu - it lets you log out, switch users, shutdown the machine, but
not quit this obnoxious application. When you ask to change the
appearance of the desktop, picking a plain image instead of this
monstrosity is not an option. The scroll wheel doesn't scroll through
the list of applications but instead changes workspaces (compiz). And
you need to scroll because (on a big screen at least), it wastes 75% of
the screen space within the applications icon area.
the webpage (gosportal) says "It includes a toggler/switcher which [is
hidden in] the Accessories menu which will allow to too easily switch
back and forth between a Netbook UI and the default gOS Gadgets Desktop
Interface". Yeah, like that is a logical place to look. And it isn't
actually there, as far as I can tell.
And all this useless app does is let you pick the same programs you can
pick off the pull down menus. Pull down menus that work without
minimizing all your windows and without having to leave space so you can
click on the desktop.
How is taking over the whole screen supposed to help with using a small
netbook screen? Where is the logic in that? The only imaginable use
for it would be for fat fingers on a touchscreen and it wouldn't work
for that because the scrollbar is too small.
Of course, there is one easy but non-controllable way to get rid of it. The thing randomly segfaults, after about a minute of interaction. Six times.

compiz is running. And is more useful than this app. gosportal says
compiz excites the bugs in netbook-launcher.
