I found I can also get the X server to crash by doing the following:

Log in as primary user
Choose "Lock screen" option
Choose "switch user"
Once at login screen, hit CTRL-ALT-F2.

The x server crashes with the same syslog error:
gdm[20849]: WARNING: gdm_slave_xioerror_handler: Fatal X error - Restarting :20
