Public bug reported:

I installed 'blackberry-gui', plugged in my BlackBerry Curve (recently
purchased) using Ubuntu 9.04 (up-to-date as of 2009/03/10) and received
this error:

$ barrybackup
Usb::Error caught in main:
(-1, error sending control message: Operation not permitted): Probe: GetConfiguration failed
