Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: emesene

Description:	Ubuntu 8.10
Release:	8.10
Linux julian 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP Thu Jan 29 19:28:32 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux

emesene:
  Installed: 1.0.1-1
  Candidate: 1.0.1-1
  Version table:
 *** 1.0.1-1 0
        500 http://ubuntu.mirror.rafal.ca intrepid/universe Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I have the "Notifications" plugin enabled, which created little
"toaster" popups whenever a contact comes online/messages/emails. This
works for the most part, but when I am in a group chat, emesene treats
each new received message from a group chat member as a new conversation
between me and that member.

Example:
I am A. I have been chatting with B for several minutes, and then I invite C into the conversation. The chat now becomes a group chat.

Every time B sends a message in the group chat, the Notification popup
treats it as a "new" conversation between just me (A) and B, even though
the message is a group chat message.

Same with C.

The chat itself works flawlessly. Sent messages are received by all
parties, and received messages are received by all parties. It is simply
the notification plugin that seems to be malfunctioning.
