Upgrading to a new upstream version also solves this. I am now using
1.18, though I don't know exactly when the --messages-type cmdline arg
appeared. In 1.18 the default type is 'chat', in fact.

/usr/local/bin/sendxmpp (chmod 755) is sufficient to test the new
version.
