Further observations: both VGA and TV1 can be used alone, disabling the other, but together
they work only in mirrored mode.

The resolutions offered for the VGA output are rather limited: only 640x480, 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x864 and 1360x768 - the monitor's native 1280x1024 is notably missing.
The TV output in contrast gets just about every possible resolution up to 1600x1024.

And this is with Intel D945GCLF2's integrated video.
