[Bug 387351] [NEW] Wrong literature abbreviation with german umlaut, bibtex

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: texlive-base

Ubuntu 9.04
Package: texlive-base 2007.dfsg.1-5

The abbreviations in the text are built from the first three letters of the author's name and the last two digits of the publication year. In my case, an author is called Müller, written as M\"{u}eller, and the publication is dated to 2007.
When building the bibliography, the .bbl file contains
\bibitem[M\"07]{Mueller07}
which results to [MÖ7] instead of [Mül07].
Is there a workaround besides editing the .bbl file?

** Affects: texlive-base (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
