The problem went away as soon as I uninstalled Tracker, which had been
using 100% CPU for several minutes before each lockup.

And then there's this: "Uname: Linux 2.6.27-11-generic i686". So for
some bizarre reason, I was still running the Ubuntu 8.10 kernel rather
than the 9.04 one (I've now fixed that). I'd be happy for this bug
report to be marked invalid for that reason alone.
