The black screen just happened again.
Ctrl+Alt+F1 / Ctrl+Alt+F7 works to repeatedly switch between the VT and the black screen.
The drmDropMaster line is added each time.
Attached is a copy of Xorg.log.0 taken after a Ctrl+Alt+F1.
It turns out that suspend / resume clears the problem until the next time (where suspend = Fn+Esc on this laptop).
