Does this still occur if you have the external monitor disconnected (but
the Virtual set as above)? With the external monitor disconnected, does
it still happen if you reduce the first number to 2049? And to 2048?

** Summary changed:

- all displays fail to output applications when virtual is set
+ [i915gm]all displays fail to output applications when virtual is set

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Display Preferences application writes the following to xorg.conf when
  mirror display is disabled:

  Section "Screen"
          Identifier "Default Screen"
          Monitor "Configured Monitor"
          Device "Configured Video Device"
          SubSection "Display"
                  Virtual 2680 1050
          EndSubSection
  EndSection

This combined with the latest xserver-xorg-video-intel causes both
displays to activate but no applications are shown on either of the
displays. For example, in gdm login the mouse cursor is shown on both
screens yet both screens remain otherwise black. (the gdm login screen
  is not displayed).

I'm assuming that this isn't caused by gdm since if i enter my username
and password to the blank screen, i can hear the login sound playing.
