Sorry, this looks like a specific manifestation of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/359392 & *seems* to be resolved for me by using the "Optimal"
instructions from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582. I've
marked this as a duplicate.
