Seems to be fixed in Karmic Alpha3 ( shells are now smoothy ;) ).
Doesn't work in Ubuntu <= 9.04, same problems exists on other distributions e.g. Gentoo.
Workaround: Ctrl+Alt+FX -> Ctrl+Alt+F7 -> Ctrl+Alt+FX -> works
