In recent 2.6.31-rc kernels there is a forward-rolling disk format change that requires version 0.19 of the btrfs-tools.
The version of btrfs-tools currently synced from Debian is 0.18-4.

Information about the forward-rolling change of the disk format was posted on the linux-btrfs mailing list.
