I also get the "Unknown command" at boot, but then KMS works.

Comment #6 at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22453
indicates that the xserver in Karmic (1.6.1.901) may not be new enough
to contain the fix for the upstream bug. The fix should be in 1.6.2 and
this is already packaged for Debian July 13th
(http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/x/xorg-server/xorg-
server_1.6.2-1/changelog) and will probably be synced from there soon.
It is already in the xorg-edgers PPA, so you can test with that (I will
do that once time permits). Note that there is a script to test this
using a LiveCD.
