I compiled from source and privoxy did not work so I:

sudo apt-get install privoxy

and it died with this error:

Starting filtering proxy server: invoke-rc.d: initscript privoxy, action "start" failed.
dpkg: error processing privoxy (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

Machine i386
Ubuntu 9.04
Privoxy version 3.0.6
