I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 alpha2, x86_64 also experiencing this problem. My version of VMware is 2.5.2 x86_64.
At the beginning it was because i didnt run the VMware player under root, but a reinstall still has this problem when running vmplayer from terminal despite the gui installation saying "Installation Successful"

when i run vmplayer it attempts to run Virtual Machine Monitor
my terminal output as i run vmplayer is in attachment.
