I used to have this problem with my Core-2 Quad based Dell Inspiron 530.
The problem went away when I changed from an ATI graphics card to a
GeForce GTS 250.  This may not be relevant as there have been software
updates in the meantime, but this fault was persistent and completely
repeatable with both Ibex and Jaunty.
