Public bug reported:

I was installing LimeWire 5.2.4 (Beta) which led to the installation of
Java as a dependency. During the install, the CPU frequency went up to
2.5 Ghz and the computer shut down due to overheating when Synaptic was
still working. I rebooted, ran Synaptic again which asked to run dpkg
--configure -a in the console, I did it and relaunched Synaptic. Then I
followed the instructions and removed the broken Java package and
everything seems to be working fine now. (Ubuntu 8.10 for AMD64).
