This still happens in intrepid :-(

Any old trivial source that tries to use one of the Garamond fonts will
fail the same way For example:

\font\rm=ugmr8a at 12pt
\rm
\pdfoutput=1

This is a test.
 
\vfill\eject
\end

----

If one comments out the first line (so that it uses the default rm font)
then it works fine.
