  My Dell Latitude C400 uses an Intel i830M chipset. The display is
  configured at 1024x768, 60 Hz, 24-bit -- however, when I look at any
  kind of gradient, I see "banding" instead of a smooth transition between
  colors. I think this is because this graphics card does not support true
  24-bit color, but 18-bit with dithering -- but I don't think the driver
  is enabling dithering for my chipset, and there is no way to force it in
  xorg.conf (unlike the driver for some other chips).
