I decided to go with option 1 - install the .debs for the newer
version of the intel xorg driver.

I downloaded and installed:
xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.5.1-1ubuntu5~intrepid_i386.deb
libdrm-intel1_2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid_i386.deb
libdrm2_2.4.1-0ubuntu7~intrepid_i386.deb

I can confirm that the newer versions of the intel graphics driver fix
the screen resolution problem on my system.

Please let me know if you need anything further from me.
