It seems to work fine for me.  It displays a page of what appears to be
cyrillic text.

0.  Run memtest on your system.  The erratic problems almost sound like
hardware issues.  Alternatively, see if you can reproduce the crash on
another computer.

1.  See if you can reproduce the bug independent of your code.  For
instance, can you cause a crash by loading the tiff in some other
program?

2.  Collect a backtrace from your crash.  See
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions.

3.  Recode the program to simplify it down to a shorter example,
preferably a single file.
