Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: wine

On Windows, it's not always obvious when new items have been added to
the start menu, in part because there isn't a dominant standard for
installing apps like our Gnome-app-install. Users would sometimes not
know when they had a new application they could run or, when they did,
where in the start menu it was buried.

Later versions of Windows addressed this problem somewhat through a few
mechanisms:placing new start menu items at the bottom, highlighting
them, and telling the user through text that new items had been added
after they clicked the start button.

We inherit this problem somewhat through the use of Wine. While the
problem is mitigated as users tend to have fewer Wine applications and
they are localized within the Wine menu (making them marginally easier
to find since they're not competing with other menu items), we still
don't have an obvious way of telling the user that they have new
Applications->Wine menu items.

Some options to consider:
* We could use the new transparent notifications system being developed for Jaunty to send a message whenever a Windows program (generally an installer) creates such a link.
* We could make cliking the applications button spawn a similar notification when a new Wine item is there. We could also call attention to the Wine portion of the menu (by highlighting or flashing it) temporarily to coincide with the notification.

** Affects: wine (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Wishlist
         Status: Triaged

** Changed in: wine (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Wishlist
       Status: New => Triaged
