Hi, sorry for the long delay. I've been too bus to try this out.
I'm writing this from a fresh install of Ubuntu 8.10
I've done the two steps you mentioned, my current ifconfig output is:

The shown MAC Address is the same as in Fedora 10 (I've seen some posts about the forcedeth driver showing inverse MAC addresses)
I will attach the ifconfig output of fedora as soon as I log back in.
