The problem may have been in the X11 server, not necessarily with
Stellarium.  I was using the open source radeon driver, but after a
brief fling with trying to use fglrx (which still doesn't handle my 2
monitor setup in a usable manner), I reverted to the OSS driver once
again.  Then all of a sudden things started working (Stellarium, f-spot
at least).

I think I noticed one possible freeze/crash occur, and when I close
Stellarium now it's very verbose about, for example, "*** glibc detected
*** stellarium: corrupted double-linked list: 0x09aab168 ***" but at
least it's usable!

Sorry for any red herrings...
