It seems like the quirk quirk_detailed_use_maximum_size is made for
working around physical size problems like this. This is the description
from hw/xfree86/modes/xf86EdidModes.c in the source code for X.org:

    /* Detailed timing descriptors have bogus size values, so just take the
     * maximum size and use that.
     */

The resolution is probably another story.
