You removed the folderview applet, so yes, the Desktop files are missing.
If you'd prefer, you can click the Plasma icon in the upper-right corner of the desktop, select "Appearance Settings", and change the Desktop Activity type to "Folderview" to have icons directly on your wallpaper.
