"This is because XChat-Chats version 2.2.0 predates Pidgin 2.4.0, in which there were some UI changes to the Conversation window. When using Pidgin 2.4.0 or newer, XChat-Chats must be at least version 2.3.0. If a newer Purple Plugin Pack was packaged for Ubuntu, this issue would go away immediately."

Pidgin's 2.5.2 by default in ubuntu intrepid.  Pidgin-plugin-pack is
2.2.0 which is way out of date, and according to the comment mentioned
above, this is an important upgrade needed to stop plugins to crash.
