the problem can be resolved by disabling two options in acroread:
Edit->Preferences->Internet-> Allow fast web view & Allow speculative downloading in the backgroud

can anyone confirm?
(on my system, when launching acroread, the gnome panel would freeze for 3-4 seconds, now it doesn't anymore)
