I also reinstalled gdal when I reinstalled GRASS from the Ubuntu
repository as described above. I have the latest version 1.5.2-2.

I did as Rian and installed grass from the Debian repository. And it
worked! However, when I removed it and reinstalled from the Ubuntu
repository, it didn't work, as it worked for him. So I am removed it
again and I am now using the version from Debian.
