I forgot to mention, I'm using Kubuntu 8.10/Intrepid with:
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10.3
kwin 4:4.2.0-0ubuntu1~intrepid1~ppa5 (from the kubuntu-experimental ppa)
Also, kwin's desktop effects are on.  I'll try disabling that, as well.
