Quick fix, now that new NVIDIA drivers are in the Ubuntu repositories.

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-180

It should uninstall the NVIDIA 177 driver and install the 180 version.
Then reboot your machine and you should be using the new 180 version of the driver...  And OpenOffice menus and buttons work fine.
