Try this:
telnet localhost 6667

You should see output like this:
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
:localhost NOTICE AUTH :BitlBee-IRCd initialized, please go on

If you don't see that output, then BitlBee isn't listening on that port,
or BitlBee isn't running. You might also try replacing "localhost" with
127.0.0.1 to see if it's a problem resolving the localhost name.
