Thanks for reporting this bug. Perhaps you would have better luck
installing from the Xubuntu alternate cd instead of the desktop cd. It
appears the desktop cd for Xubuntu 9.10 has some serious issues that are
unresolved at the present time. For a better trial cd, I would have to
suggest the Xubuntu 9.04 Desktop/live cd, available from
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/9.04/release/ . This release
has been available for six months and does not have the issues you are
experiencing.
