Xubuntu 9.10 x64 - using Nautilus as file manager

When rightclicking in Nautilus on a .gif and selecting ristretto as the
program to open the gif, one most of the time gets a blank (but for the
thumbnails) ristretto window. Sometimes one sees the gif flashing by
before the blank window, and sometimes an other non-gif file is
displayed.

/var/log/messages shows entries like:
Dec 25 10:48:22 riposo kernel: [ 3133.394241] ristretto[2393]: segfault at 700000008 ip 00007fb0b4c203fa sp 00007fff030293a0 error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.2200.2[7fb0b4c11000+44000]
