That's precisely why it is better to work with the symbolic links as
they did in Ubuntu 9.04 and before:

cd /usr
sudo mkdir X11R6
cd X11R6
sudo ln -s /usr/bin bin

=> that way it won't matter if the "gdm.conf" file gets overwritten by a
new update or not.
