Maybe I found the problem.
Altough I am using the 32 bit version of Karmic, I have been experiencing freezes or extremely slow performance with Virtualbox running XP. For the first couple of week, I had no problems. So maybe it all started when I activited the Compiz effects. I have reseted the desktop effects to "No effects" (in Appearance) and so far everything is working great.
