vmware-user and the scripts to spawn it are installed by open-vm-
toolbox, not open-vm-tools. I'm not sure how you could have had a
vmware-user available if you only installed open-vm-tools. You didn't
have an old VMWare Tools install lying around, did you?

In any case, please try installing open-vm-toolbox and see if you can
still reproduce this bug (you'll need to log out and back in) - open-vm-
toolbox is currently working fine for me in a Karmic VM running under
Fusion.
