Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: dvdrip
Hello, I apologize in advance if this bug should be reported against
transcode, but I've only used dvd:rip to transcode videos, so this is my
method for reproducing this bug.
I've used this program for almost a year, and ripped over 50 dvd's
without any problems. However, on the upgrade (or fresh install) to
karmic, the resulting encoded videos do not play back correctly. There
are no errors in the log file during this process. The resulting video
playback alternates between slow jerky playback and too quick motion
(which cycles on the order of a second, or a half second of slightly
slower jerky video, followed by around a half second of too quick
motion). This is only seen in videos encoded using the karmic packages,
older encoded videos (from a month or later ripped under jaunty) play
back perfectly, so I don't think its a setup or system issue. This is
seen in both full screen and unzoomed viewing, with no visible
difference in the issue between the two. Also, playback of the VOB
files directly from VLC results in perfect playback, so I don't think
its an issue with the ripping. Finally, this effect is visible from both
xine and VLC. I've tried this on a wide range of videos, including TV
shows and 10+ movies, and have the same issue for all of them.
This system is a fully upgraded (as of 12/17/2009) fresh install of kubuntu karmic 64 bit from the release cd, with basically only the utilities necessary for dvd:rip installed, and no customization. The hardware specs are
AMD Phenom X4 quad-core 9950
4G RAM
AMD ATI 2600 HD
The self check results in all OK, no errors or issues reported.
Please let me know if there's any other information I can provide.
Thanks.
