I'm using ubuntu 9.04 server and I have the same problem
I installed xvn4server and I'm not in able to see the gnome desktop from remote computer, I only see the gray screen with a big X for the mouse pointer (the classic X screen)
If I start Xvnc without specify the vnc password's file the remote connection is refused and I could launch it whit this command line

$ Xvnc -rfbauth ~/.vnc/passwd -geometry 1024x768 :1

during the installation and the first time that i launch the server the xstartup file is not created and also if i create it (whit execute permission) the server don't read in it and I'm not in able to launch gnome (already installed but stopped during the sistem start changing the file name in rc2.d)
I hope is the same bug :)

thanks
Luca N
