While not preferred, it is possible that you could modify the
1.5.1+dfsg1 package to be up to the new version. We then could include
the upgraded version in Lucid and send what we did back to Debian.

However, (1) the build system looks like it could use some help (from
the debian/rules file, uses mv and cp instead of dh_install for
example, and it ships with configure already made and with old
autotools files), (2) the debian maintainer did something to the
upstream source to make it DFSG and I can't find what exactly, (3)
there are missing/unmet dependencies [1], and (4) there are multiple
lintian warnings with the package (Ubuntu might not care, but Debian
will) [2]. Because of those issues, it would probably be best to work
with the Debian maintainer or even adopt the package from Debian to
clean up the package.

If you can give it a try, Ubuntu and Debian will appreciate it!
