Thanks for taking the time to file this bug and help make Ubuntu better.
In order to help you, we would need some additional information:

- Please provide the version of resolvconf you are running, if the
resolvconf package is installed. This information can be retrieved using
the 'apt-cache policy resolvconf' command.

- Would you have specific examples for which the current setup fails?
I'd be interested to know, since in most cases the fact that DNS
information and search string gets prepended should help a lot in
ensuring that at least a vast majority of requests are routed only
through the VPN (as long as it has the records, and responds in time).
