Actually the problem is that the version of sun-java6 in the karmic repo is 6.15, while a newer version (6-16) came through jaunty-updates, causing trouble for people that upgraded from jaunty.
For people that experience this problem, uninstall the jaunty versions of all sun-java6 packages (use the "local/obsolete" filter in synaptic.
For package maintainers: why not add sun-java6 version 6-16 to karmic-updates?
