This seems to be the same bug like #386849. It's fixed in the developent
version, so you can either wait until Ubuntu 9.10 is released (october
27) or try if the development package can be installed manually (i don't
have Ubuntu 8.10 here to check) from
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/soundconverter.
