The error message is unfortunately a bit confusing. It means that the
combination of number of channels, sample format and sample rate can not
be played directly. I don't know what espeak generates but my guess is
that it will play if you convert the sample rate to 44100 Hz

The newest version 1.4.16 of mhWaveEdit (not yet in Ubuntu) has support
for PulseAudio, and in this version you will probably not get this error
anymore.
