Got it.  Actually I described the issue incorrectly in my example: the problem 
is in fact with compiling, not with dependencies in just using the packages.  
OpenCV is largely used for development, and it's libcv-dev that depends on 
libav*-dev, which is not satisfied by libav*-unstripped.

So if (in karmic) libavcodec-dev can now be satisfied by having libavcodec-
unstripped, etc., then it's all good.  thanks!
