a subsequent apt-get install kerneloops seems ok but how can i verify
it's working?

Setting up kerneloops (0.12-0ubuntu5) ...
 * Starting Kernel Oops catching service kerneloops               [ OK ] 

$ ps ax | grep oops
14986 ?        Ss     0:00 /usr/sbin/kerneloops
