Thank you Chris. Any idea why 2.49a isn't in Debian?

Christoph, as I wrote in comment #3, the blender status in Debian can be
tracked at http://packages.qa.debian.org/b/blender.html . 2.49 is also
at ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/b/blender/ . Did you misread
Chris' comment as 2.49a?
