Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: grub2

After I applied the update to version 1.96+20090725-1ubuntu1 of grub2,
grub will no longer boot my custom-compiled initramfs-less kernel.
Instead, it just displays the size and location of the kernel in Hex and
hardlocks the PC. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work; I must use the power
switch to disable the PC. The stock ubuntu kernel is booted properly,
and reverting to the next-to-latest grub version brings back the
capability to boot the custom kernel.

** Affects: grub2 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
