Killing the parent of the gnome-terminal processes destroyed the zombies
but did not bring back the screen.

@jbond, we do not need people to confirm that they are not having the X
freeze.  I understand you're probably frustrated to have lost compiz,
but trust me you're lucky you have only lost desktop effects and are not
suffering the freeze problem.  ;-)  You can comment on 363821 if you
wish.
